Overclock my processor

ok i was wondering if anyone could tell me how i could achieve to overclock my process I have an AMD Athalon 2400+ 2.0 Ghz

Usually, this is done by altering settings in the BIOS.

You change the multiplier or clock speed therefore increasing the speed of the processor.

Do note though that it would be wise to only overclock in small increments and not one big jump. Also you need to have adequate cooling for your system as the more you overclock, the hotter it gets.

I have an AMD 2700 2.17 GHz and I've had some trouble myself to overclock, possibly because the processor is locked, or my MSI motherboard has issues with it....for starters, you could try checking out http://www.overclockers.com to find some information about overclocking your processor. Keeping your processor cool enough is key in oc'ing...I've found that cooling your system with coolant as opposed to traditional fans works really well. Hope this helps you a little.

Also, most PC manafactures i.e. Dell, compaq, HP, ect lock down the BIOS so you can not overclock. They still give you access to it, but don't let you access the CPU part of it.

Hi silent-mage,

1. Why do you want to overclock your processor? there might be other solutions.
2. AMD Athlons run pretty hot out of the box, so they would not be my choice of processor for this activity. A Duron is more forgiving and Pentiums rock.
3. If you really love your PC..don't do it....get an old one and mess around with that first. OK I bought a PIV 2.26 Ghz with a suitable MoBo, fans etc and overclocked it to 3.066 stable (24 Hrs)...it was a "racing car" two years ago . I did realise that I was risking around $1,000 worth of kit, but I was prepared to do that.
4. You MUST use silver thermal compound at the very least.........the white stuff is no good for the overclocking game.
5. You must consider your case geometry and airflow. You will need extra fans, and maybe some home-made ducting to direct cool air onto the processor.
6. Look at tubular, rather than flat connector cables.
7. Your PSU will need to be able to handle the extra load.
8. Watch out for your HDD(s) They don't like heat

wow thx nihil, for the great advice. I don't think im gonna overclock it, im gonna go buy a new mother board with at leat an 800 mhz FSB, and a new Intel P4 processor, then overclock that one, new fans. then a little editing of my personal linking =D thx so much man, for the heads up!! or i prolly would of killed my processor

What are you looking to gain by overclocking a new processor, the bus speed, ram speed and HD seek time are your bottel necks not the processor speeed when dealing with anything over 1 ghz. If you had an older system that you where trying to get some life out of I could see the point, overclocking a blazing fast AMD or P4 will gain you nothing.

Before you start, perhaps you might like to PM me to discuss details. If you want to try overclocking, I would certainly suggest using a throw-away bit of kit first?

Then you are into the realm of water cooled peltiers............run the processor at about 5C to minus 15C on idle?

What is it you want to do/ find out?
