locking files

hi! if u have dos,go 2 dos prompt, type rename <file path> <alt 255>
this will lock the file very much! the properties in windows shows this file as having 0 byte size!
it is because 255 is ascii no. for space!

I tried what you guys said about making the folder blank and putting a space as the name. But it didnt work the old name just kept coming back.

not a space, did you just press space or held down the "alt" key and typed in 255 ?

i will explain
assume the file is- abc.txt (u have 2 remember the extension!)
type rename abc.txt <alt+255>
now ur file is locked!
to unlock-
type rename <alt+255> abc.txt (u can use anything for abc, but .txt should be maintained!)

That's not really locking the file. That's more hiding a portion of the name. Remember that "security by obscurity" isn't that strong.

If you are going to lock a file use the EFS (provided with) or get a third party tool that will allow for it to be locked. However, the best case for files is not to store them on the machine if security and confidentiality are concerns.

i completely agree with u on this point! but this is one of the way when there is short time and no tool!
