2 machines on 1 network?

ensure that the admin p/w is the same on both machines... check that the security for the file folder permissions allow access for the current logged on user and ensure that you are "sharing" the folder(s) in question. If the logged on users for the machines are different make sure you add the username & p/w on the other machine and assign it the folder where you need access to. If you want access to the laptop folder or hard drive ensure that you are sharing it and vise/versa for the desktop.

i know this may be a bit obvious, but couldn't hurt to make sure that "file and print sharing" is installed and enabled on both machines.

also, i have seen weird issues like this happen due to issues with the network hub/switch, and sometimes even the cabling if the cables happen to be wired differently from each other. if you have a cable tester laying around, i would verify that they are both working without error, and using the same wiring scheme.

Fat32/ntfs has no place in this problem.. I have win98 with Fat32, WinXP with FAt32 and NTFS partitions and file shareing is AOK over my networks

I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned the software firewall in XP. The XP firewall, Zonealarm or Black Ice and other software firewalls will prevent connections from other machines on the network.

LoL, so two XP shares walk in to a bar. One can see the other but not vice versa. The share that can't see the other says

"Hey other share, I can't see you. Are your permissions set too high?"

the other one replies with

"No that's not it"

so the share asks again,

"Hey other share, are you firewalled?"

to which the 2nd share replies

"Nah man that still isn't it.

then,
"Is your cable plugged in?"
"Yep"
"You on?"
"Yep"

Finally, the fed up share finally says
"Well then what is it!?"

To which the other replies
"Dude, I'm a fridge."
