What is the easiest way of deploying microsoft critical patches to a microsoft environment network. I want to do it silently and with little user interaction. all feedback is appreciated...

well, first I would use BigFix Manager, It monitors machines on your network , and than deploys the patches that the machine needs, it programmable and it works damn good, better than the normal system patching, or you can use HFNetChk (Hotfix Network Check) but it does not install the patches just tells you what each machine needs and were to fine it.

are all the computers connected to a domain with active directory, because if so, you can you can use microsoft to deploy the msi/msp's

you could also create a shutdown script to install the updates but this requires some scripting knowledge.

I do believe. Alot of companies are still running on NT4. You're not alone
You can use SUS to update your XP clients. As for your NT4 servers migrate them, you have to do it anyway because MS will stop supporting NT4 Server in the near future. It already stopped supporting NT4 workstation.
