You'd like to be optimistic and hope it will make a difference but if it requires any user intervention the "nearly two-thirds of Windows users who don't have up-to-date antivirus software on their computers" probably won't have it working properly anyway.

This could show promise though.

Think about. If MS incorporated a real AV into Windows, then they could set it to default to automatic updates. Then it wouldn't matter (to an extent) if the goofy users thought to update it themselves or not. Just like any other automated Windows Update, signatures would download and install without a finger being lifted.

That is, were they to set that as a default setting. Let's hope so.

That would be a nifty feature for the average no-clue user.

But they're looking at acquiring McAfee? Boy, that's a lofty endeavor! Geez, don't they have control of enough markets already?

Anyway's, it would be pretty sad if Microsoft did acquire McAfee. Just think how spammed onto the OS it would be, how IE would have it spammed, outlook, etc (which could be a good thing, but more than likely an annoying one).

Based on the thread poster, I agree...I'd say at least 75% of all windows users out there aren't using AV and those that are, I can't tell you how many times I've seen packaged machines that came with a free one-year trial that had expired 2 years prior, etc...or even worse, the DOS command-line AV startup scan that says "Your definitions have been expired for the past 1820 days...". ROFL!

This is the failing line as of this link:

Symantec recommends that users and administrators of all modern flavors of Windows patch their systems and update their virus definitions in concert with some basic security "best practices" outlined in this security bulletin.

They all recommend that users/etc "update" their systems and AV (if they had it). Most have never learned how to update anything...and that's the problem.

M$ certainly bougt e-trust................it ships with the free security CD...........second disc.

They are going back there............yes I actually have a copy of M$ antivirus that shipped with DOS (around about 3.0 I think)

They are going into security after a fashion..............but that makes sense, because that is what they get criticised for?
