Bye Bye Bluetooth?

As reported in this news report a few weeks ago, Ericsson (news - web sites) announced that it had halted Bluetooth development. Immediately, a hue and cry rose in the media that Bluetooth would soon be dead. Ericsson claimed that closing the development was simply a sign that Bluetooth was "mature."

I have been wondering abt. bluetooth from few days, one of my friend ask me abt the security flaws or u can say leaks in this technology somebody told me that at security mode 3 there is some AUthentication problem. Do u know whts that problem is?

I am actually surprised bluetooth made it this far. There was some isses early on and 802 was on the rise, many projected a stalemate. It has it's purpose though, unless they figure on building wifi into every little piece of electronics.

First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate the Bluetooth wireless communication system as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres.

So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone. So, personalised messages like 'I like your pink top' and the startled expressions that result is where the fun really starts.

just one of them . just imagine the amount of hovac you can create,especially if you are stalking some one .i really preffer infra red communication rather than blue tooth in an moblie phone , in my cell my blue tooth connectivety is always switched off. and who knows some boby nay even steal (copy) my data using blue tooth . Bluejacking has been around a while and is a misnomer since no 'jacking' actually occurs - just a tag to make it sound a little bit 'underground' and 'sexy'. I've given up on Bluetooth and actually use IR if I need to transfer a business card, a number, etc to another mobile because the 10 metre range is if you use Utopian, Ideal World conditions - in reality, I have spent fruitless minutes trying to connect with a friend's mobile despite the fact that we were right next to each other!

Also, whilst it may be 'fun' to send random messages to people, why not just switch off Bluetooth, have a beer or two and walk over to random_person_1 and TELL them that you like their top. Who knows? You may get a smile, conversation and even hook up with them. Much better than spending half the night trying to send an ever so witty text to them, looking like a Billy No Mates playing with your mobile whilst your friends are socialising and surveying the scene :)

yes i'd say that it is kinda weak in protection , but hey so was the internet when it began , we did not have any fire walls, lots of viruses were on the prowl. but did we give up the net . nooo we just tried to make it secure, i am quite sure , with some more time being given to blue tooth it will also out come its defects

It seems to me that every system has it weaknesses.
Every oppinion on this "survivaloptions" is actually ridiculous cuz many "weak" systems have survived better systems.

We could discuss the weaknesses but I think that both options IR and bluetooth are good and maybe even complementair. What the one can't do does the other one and so on.

Just don't use bluetooth for businesscards, It just don't work good, for now.
