a year or so ago we would get kicked off every week. internet would stop working and i would have to pull the power on the modem and router...then internet worked

dad called and complained and it hasnt happened since then... maybe they switched us from dynamic to static

Yes that's it.................less cost for the ISP Certainly, over here, you have to pay for guaranteed static Addys.

A lot of cable is effectively static though, as they don't have the same infrastructure problems as the Telcos? so stuff stays the same for a long time. Having had a think, I suspect that they detect that you have disconnected the modem, and run some kind of maintenance routine..........that would probably get you a new address when you re-connected. I am talking about the one I used over here.

My ADSL uses my telephone line, but a different part from the voice connection, so I get a new Addy every time I reconnect.

Following what we have been discussing I guess when you had a lot of problems and your Dad complained they switched you to a commercial, static connection.
