thnx for the help zencoder, by the way anyone who is wondering i did get permision to hack the server so no worries. Thnx for all the help again i should be off to a good start. The entire thing is to improve the servers security from the inside (its a school server) and out. Thnx again, and hopefully ill be able to get in

For legitimate vulnerability testing I think it should be 'Hopefully I can't get in'

Although it may be kind of too late, does anyone else see the contradiction between these 2 posts? To a point I dont really see how this is going to test the servers security other than you are testing the strenght of the passwords. The first step would be to keep the server in a locked server rack where only certain ppl can access it, this would prevent someone sitting down at it and messing with it. Second would be keeping updates installed and tested, and utilizing strong passwords (search this site for some tuts on how to keep your password strong)
And you may want to get this "Permission" in writing to CYA if you really do have permission last thing you need is to step on someones toes and then have them lash back at you
