If you are using Windows download one of these apps to extract the file[s] [1.2]...
[1] 7-Zip [Free]
[2] WinZip [Commercial]

Hey Hey,
everyone's given you ways of opening it.... the .gz extension means that it's gunzipped or gzipped... (uniz programs = gzip and gunzip)... Generally you'll see .tar.gz as tar will only archive files (not compress them... Tape Archive) and Gunzip will only compress a single file... so they work well together..
Gunzip does have one nice feature.... You can reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed by visitors to your website... and companies can use it to offer "High Speed Dial-Up"
Check out the following links...
http://www.aoaddicts.net/htregz/test.txt.gz
http://www.aoaddicts.net/htregz/test.html.gz
http://www.aoaddicts.net/htregz/antionline-sm.gif.gz
Browse to them in your browser... You'll see them as if they were a txt, an html and a gif... but if you wget them you'll get the compressed files...
Peace,
HT
