    Hi,

Glad you got it done, i was just going to add a little tale from back when i was a kid.

My cousin brought round his PC (and yes we are talking about a big ass desktop) and we wanted to try just copying everything from mine to his, (he had screwed his up somehow and couldn't be assed to reload, plus we wanted to try it anyway just to see how it coped). Both were running the origional version of Win 95 at the time, the one that came on floppys

Anyway we were using FX to transfer and just told it to copy all of my computer to his. FX started working away and the next day we came back to it and it was done, yay, apart from the fact that because it was DOS any filename that was of any length had been truncated with a ~ as DOS used to do, so none of it worked

Ah well, after a bit of playing we eventually got DOOM2 to work so all was not lost

It's called a Thumb Drive... Phlak is a liveCD and it can be installed onto a thumbdrive..
Just like KnoppixSTD can be put onto a thumbdrive and used instead of a CD.

Maybe take a look at it some time, considering majority of liveCD's can be used with thumbdrives to boot up with..

not that it is a bad thing.. if it was

    See F2B's reply..

And to F2B sry if I infered an insult.. I felt that some readers would be mislead by the context.. thanks for the explaination..

considering majority of liveCD's can be used with thumbdrives
this is true.. but some are more easily/safely installed on a jumpdrive than others..ie the funny smell these drives make when there is too much swap file activity.. but it is some 6 months since I last played with any..

    And finaly.. which method worked?

The method that got the job done was to boot up with Phlak, on a thumbdrive, and then i put Sirdice's idea to work.

I had to do a little bit of fiddling, only because the first attempt did not go as planned, it cloned everything, but it got corrupted somewhere during the transplant.

Once i had recovered the data and safely got it moved to the fresh hard-drive, i had a look at what House929 suggested...

you could also do ufsdump /ufsrestore
This program is very similar to Nortan Ghost, only it's a little more user friendly and easy to use and is not a resource hog, the only problem is that they don't tell you that with the free version you cannot use a CDimage to transplant from one hard disk to the next.

You need to purchase the professional edition to do that. But i purchased it anyhow, as i was extremely curious about it, and i am very happy with what i paid for it.
