i hear noises

i have a laptop when if i put it on a hard surface and max out the speaker volume and listen carefully when i maximise (god that sounds so transformeresq!! good film btw) or minimise (they never say that though!) an application there is a qute 'blllluupp' noise.

anyone else get that? or have i a specialist tinatus?

Have you tried the same test with external speakers? At full volume they give you a better idea.

Have you checked your sound settings to see what "event noises" are set....... you don't say which OS version but most have a facility to run a test so you could compare?

The "hard surface" is reasonable to me............it is an accoustic sounding board. As I suggested, even very cheap PC speakers will do a far better analysis job

The next move is that we will have to modify your "event noises"? Like launching an application gets Clint Eastwood saying:

"What you've got to ask yourself is 'do I feel lucky'........well?.......... do ya, punk?"

Or, instead of the "You've got mail" we have:

"Muhahahahaha...........some m***** f***** just sent you more junk mail"

Yeah i think nihil is right on the dot...if xp (most likely?) go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices - > Sounds tab and see what sounds are set for what action, ive seen this on a few PC and people didnt know how to get rid of it...you can just choose WIndows Deafult or No sounds from the drop down menu and see if that stops it....

The answer is: Utopia Critical Stop .WAV, where "Utopia" is an MS sound scheme, .wav is an audio file, and I am an even sadder individual than yourself.

Actually, I clearly remembered the event sound you mentioned, so I just had to check it out

i do not have any sounds running
emptied the folder ages ago
i have noticed the same thing no my cassio cassiopia
so no it is not anything to do with critical stops or other ms sounds
i might be dumb but i aint that much of a newbie, oldbie perhaps!!

any other thoughts?

well, my current PC has an onboard soundcard and there is definately some kind of signal leakage. I've disabled windows sounds ages ago and yet with nothing else making sounds things like moving the mouse and maximising/minimising make strange noises (very quietly) could be something similar.

Yeah, that was why I suggested trying external speakers to see if it had any effect.

Turning off the sounds in Windows doesn't disable the chip. Attaching external speakers may well do that?

It wont turn off the chip but it will bypass the onboard speakers. If it makes the same noises then its a bad sound card. If is fixed then the onboard speakers are bad.

When you turn the volume to max, it's likely anything
could happen. Musicians know this. Turn your guitar amp all
the way up and plug in a cord with frayed shielding. you'll
get anything from aircraft communication to 60s oldies.
If nothing weird happens at normal volumes, don't sweat it.
