Ubuntu e-mail client

holy wall of text spent more time reading then i did installing.

still trying to figure out this wireless device under Debian but have gotten that sylpheed e-mail client setup under Ubuntu.. just downloaded like 5gb worth of e-mails gave a few jitters during the send/recieve.

Now for the close reboot and re-launch see how it goes

So from what i understood the main (and maybe only) issue is, that its overbloated. I cant say anything, since from a GUI point of view i only used this one for like ages, so i have no real comparison to match it up with (I used to use pine VERY long ago, and liked it). I would like to give kmail a try, but ONLY if i can use it without having to actually install KDE on the system. Some kde apps are known to work without the entire kde package installed. I will give it a try though and see

Current system: Slackware 13.1, with fluxbox on a not too old box (dual core @ 2.6, & 3 gigs of ram).

Ok this sylpheed doesn't appear to have html support... i need to have support for teh html to appear in both sent & recieved e-mails.

the stutters were due to after i initially setup my e-mail account/s when i did the 1st recieve of stored e-mails there was over 5gb worth of e-mails on the server.

during this send/recieve it started to stutter and show some laggness probably due to the sheer amount of e-mails that it was downloading. Nearly 3yrs worth of e-mails

Pretty much yea. I use it on this machine because it actually has good RAM and stuff, but on any other machine, well, none of my machines except this one, even meet the minimum requirements lol.

I'm pretty sure it does require KDE, but I'm not positive either. Either way I'd say to try it. It's a great application. And the whole KDE PIM thing in general is pretty cool.

Hmm, I didn't really think about that lol. Have you had a look at the plug ins? It may have them in there. Also, if all else fails, look for the Claws Mail stuff. Claws-Mail is basically a fork of Sylpheed like I was saying, and does seem to have more Plug Ins available to it. Might be another option

OK, I found something:

In Claws-Mail, the Preferences have the stuff for HTML mail. That should get you going

Nope no go, it simply says to read the mail in it's original format i need to click a link.

I even went as far as grabbin this plugin installing it but no native html support it would appear..

i might grab that kubuntu is a few mins, that's based on KDE if i'm not mistaken. then i'll grab that Kmail and give that a try i remember using it a few years back when i had peanut linux installed. It was a shame they ditched that distro and pretty much dissapeared over night. sigh

I'm going to be ditching the debian install simply because i'm having waaay to many issues with this wireless. 1 minute it's detected and working correctly the next it's dropped the signal and refusing to let me re-enable the wireless device.

If you're having that many issues, and have access to other OSs, then yea just drop it. I personally will sometimes sit here and figure that kind of thing out just to see if I can, but normally, I get pissed and drop it.

Or, better yet, get pissed, and rm -rf /* THEN format lol.

Ok the kubuntu .iso was not that big so had it downloaded and burnt to disc within 15mins.

I would of usually tinkered until i got the relevant hardware working properly but there was little info i could find that was relevant to the laptops hardware.

i even went as far as installing ndiswrapper and attempted to use the winXP driver for the wireless hardware. But it gave even more issues..

that Kmail was installed by default and was piss easy to setup and just a few clicks of the mouse and i had it displaying the way i liked.

and it seems to support my html needs.

i did install opensuse 11.3 64bit it ran perfectly detected most hardware, i wasn't able to install the propertiery display drivers for some weird reason, and the mouse pad didn't work correctly and i wasn't able to find anything to tinker with to fix that issue, and it wasn't working with the wireless device either.

all this mucking around just for an e-mail client.
