I think with sp3 for w2k and sp2 for XP (not sure on that one) you have the option to uninstall media player via control panel\add remove programs\add remove windows components. WSJ wrote about it yesterday or the day before. It was part of the settlement with the states and fed govn't that was just approved. M$ made it available early.
