I recently installed Red Hat on my laptop, a Dell. Unfortunately, it came with a WinModem, (Conexant Softmodem.)

So I went to linmodems.org and downloaded the driver, installed it without a problem (on root) logs work fine. /dev/modem points to the right file and everything.

I log out, reboot and such just in case, and it won't work. All of the dialers are telling me that the modem is either busy, or it can't initialize.

Does anyone have any ideas here? It should be working now, the chipset, kernel version, and everything is set up right, I've triple checked. I also tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers and such to make sure...it made no difference.

I'm running Red Hat 7.0 (I plan to upgrade ASAP), kernel version 2.2.16.22, i686 (Celeron).

Is it completely hopeless? Will a newer version of Red Hat (or some other distro) let this work better? Should I just spring for the external modem? Any advice here would be much appreciated. Thanks!
