No. You shouldn't need it for this kind of connection. I've done direct connect before (albeit through a switch). Right now I wonder if the cable itself is of question. Before you get them over there for the $50 charge can you take your cable from home (the Twisted Pair -- aka Cat 5) and plug it in at your friends? The reason I ask is that we know your's works.
