anyone knows the location of the autocomplete passwords that are saved in internet explorer???

i know there are many tools to read this info, but i want to know how those tools work...
there must be some file in which these passwords are saved, but which one???

(OS's: XP and 2k, IE 5.0 & 6.0)

any idea's?
