How is Windows 7’s Security Essentials?

I have a an ancient laptop - it’s from 2009 - came with Vista, but I upgraded to 7. Right now, it has McAfee which I have free through my ISP.

How does Windows Security Essentials for Windows 7 compare to a “paid” security program?
