I'm not sure how to track the b!@#$%d down maybe tracert could give a hint.

If you intend to fight this I would giving the cable modem to your attorney or accountant -someone you trust not to use. So when the compnay says your still using it you can say it was in the possesion of XYZ and they did not use it during the timeframe.
