    well that sucks...

NetSyn: sorry to hear your teacher is so close minded. It's very true that people fear the unknown, especially if that unknown has the potential to be used for bad things. Reminds me of the inquisition and the Salemn witch trials. It would be a very good idea to "try" your best to have the teacher check out the site in his/her free time. Also, give him some real skript kiddie sites to compare it with.....he will soon see the difference. [email protected] one.

On the Uni network I cannot access this site from some few machines because the security settings in the machine won't allow it saying this site is forbidden.

What I don't understand is that these machines are right next to machines that will let me access it and all of the machines are susposed to have the same settings.

In the settings for IE what is the level at which this site gets blocked? (I'm just curious cause I can't change the settings without getting in serious trouble anyway)

garathjax: what msg do you get when you attempt to access it from one of the restricted machines? - and as matter of intrest what uni you at? Southern (trinity?) or northern (queens, jordans town, coleraine?) just I have some friends there or did you go away from home?

There is a big "Forbidden" across the top of the screen and the rest of the page is the same as "The Web site cannot be found" page.

P.S. I go to UL (Limerick Uni).

netsyn... i don't think it needs to change. why should we change our cathc phrase because media driven america see the word hacker and thinks evil. did you know that there are ANTI-Terrorism sites being blocked from high school cause the word terroristt is in them? well there are. my sister was telling me about it happening at her school. people are dumb, we can only deal with it.

garathjax - try going to http://1064089033/ instead is just antionline's addy converted to hex - worked for my uni comps cause they only had the url blocked

heh then again if they r just using the security built into IE they're prolly dumb enough to have left the prefrences on (under tools>internet options>security) if none of that works and you think it is the built in IE security get another browser - I used to have a tiny one that would fit/run off a floppy that I got from downloads.com try there you might be able to turn something up Limerick.....nope don't know anyone there but hope that helps

Just post a clear definition of hacker/cracker

If a clear defenition is posted on or about the front page, this might help those with access problems convince the powers that be to permit them to view the site.

A hacker looks, but does not touch; hacking is a result
    of a curious nature.

A cracker touches; cracking is a result of poor potty
    training.

A hacker learns in order to learn.

A cracker learns in order to exploit.

Any true hacker has a Bushido-style sense of honor. A
    hacker is a Samurai.

Crackers generally have no honor. A cracker is Ronin.

The term "cracker" was not chosen lightly; it was chosen
by hackers, not by journalists. "Cracking" intentionally
implies breakage, damage, or exploitation of some kind.

In fact, it is journalists who use the terms as if they
were the same thing, which pisses hackers off immensely,
and delights crackers no end, in the same way that a
person who habitually wore black in order to impersonate
a tortured young artist would be delighted to be mistaken
    for one.
