    Need more info. What type of system admin? Or do you mean network admin...(btw Focmaester...BOFH is a net admin, not sys admin :P ) Basically, a system admin knows the system they are workin on inside out. What do you want to work on? Linux boxen? Windows workstations? Windows servers? AIX? Solaris? BSD? SCO? etc etc. Sysadmin is a general term for a lot of different jobs. You just have to pick one. Basically, figure out what kind of system you want to work with, and learn it. Once you know it, then you really start to learn it. Then, go find a copy of the OS and use it. etc etc.

    Some hard work and learning is in order. Depending on your budget ask around at various training institutions and schools. Build up a home network and hit the books.

    hmmmm.....if you want to be an nt/2k/xp admin you could hang around around the office...saying things like 'hey did you know i can hook that printer up to the network'...and 'hmmm...we could put all of the user files on individual computers on one central SERVER..'(that'll get em...)...in a scary number of cases...that's how people actually become m$ sys/net admins...not in *nix tho...coz you actually have to know stuff...hehe

    IT Systems Administration course is the way to go. If you don't have the time or the money for that buy some books and look into getting some certs. No matter what route you take your employer will most likely start you off in a Helpdesk/lab monitor type of job. Not very often do you get a network admin job handed to you with out proving you self first.
    Its not software piracy. I’m just making multiple off site backups.

    I'm looking to be a sys admin too, what languages would you reccomend for automating things on a *nix box? perl ... shell (and what version IE: bourne)... what ?
