It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!!! This is probably some Irish code for "let's take over the world!".
Mankind have a great aversion to intellectual labor; but even supposing knowledge to be easily attainable, more people would be content to be ignorant than would take even a little trouble to acquire it.

"For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals...then something happened, which unleashed the power of our imagiation...we learned to talk..." -- Pink Floyd

Abstract thought, no matter the context, cannot be replicated, by computer or otherwise...in my opinion, anyway...
Artificial cognition will be achieved, but it won't elevate itself to the status of 'thought' in my lifetime...ponderance vs. processing...

Irish lads be a posting! Other lads too, I hope. We already have the beginning of a computer consciousness we just are too close to see it yet.
It must be them again. Start the response cycle.

I agree (with Jethro's last post that is), nobody can accurately predict what such a computer can do until such a one is actually built.
I'd be willing to bet that the most serious or amazing consequences will be those that nobody ever even considered.

Remember this " I think you know what the problem is, Dave." It won't be long.

No Idea about the quote, but I reckon that if computers did evolve to become super intelligent they'd probably get bored, get depressed and kill themselves. (Bit like the Brotherhood of Steel Super computer in Fallout 2) Or is that the Emperor Super Computer?

From a religious standpoint, this can't be too good of an idea. Because it says in Genesis that ALL life is spawned of God and a totally man-made "life form" would surely rattle up the old folks down at the Vatican...

Well, based on our current nderstanding of thoughts and the brain and its functions, I believe that yes, it is possible, but still unachieveable in this current day. A decade or so, that is a different question.

garathjax- sorry to leave you hanging on that one. It's 2001 A Space Odyssey. The scene is when Dave goes out in the little resuce pod to get his now dead human partner that HAL9000 will not unlock the doors to let him back in the mother ship.
