Was the CD copied or did you use a crack to activate it?
Because that could be the problem

I had the same problem with a XP home box. I fixed it by going into the control panel, then changing the way users logon. Make it so you do have profiles and just make sure you are logged in as the admin. I'm not sure why this does that when you don't have to enter an UID and PWD...
I haven't seen this problem with PRO. Probably just a bug or something.
You can use MMC and just snap in the computer managemanet tool. Start-- run-- mmc
Hope I was of some help.

I'm sure I'm missing something here. But why do you have to be logged in as the Administrator to do Windows Update? I've never had to do that.

In all the instances I've seen, windows update is the same as an install, and with 2k and XP you must have admin priv. to install
stupid in my opinion, especially in the home version of XP where authentication security isn't really needed, unless you don't trust your roomates
but if thats the case, why would you live with them in the first place?
