Left wing Right wing.
The original political meanings of ‘left’ and ‘right’ have changed since their origin in the French estates general in 1789. There the people sitting on the left could be viewed as more or less anti-statists with those on the right being state-interventionists of one kind or another.

Everyone thinks he knows what these designations mean.
We happily go about labelling people as left or right.
I think that we do it most of the time to silence those
we disagree with, to end debate rather than to open
a discussion.
Are these terms still useful, or should we try to
find a better way to describe our opinions?
