trouble with LAN settings in Linux

hey ppl.
im running on an ME system, and ive gotten hold of GNU brutalware Linux.

well i was trying to setup my Lan manually using netinit -i
ive got my network information from winipcfg, so i went back into linux and entered my details (ip address, netowrk add, gateway etc)
but after this it comesup wiht an errot about eth0, that it coulndt find my device.

does anyone have any ideas, about getting my card? im lost

Umm, that means it can't find your ethernet card at all. Do you have the proper linux drivers for it? I have never used brutalware Linux, so I don't know much about it. Sounds like you need a copy of Kudzu. That will find all your plug and play devices.

not really, il search for network cards, brutalware is ace, but it dosnt have allot of drivers, do u have and suggestions?

Three very good suggestions: Mandrake, Redhat or Suze. Any of the three distro's are excellent.

Hmm... yep, if you stay with the big distro's you have more chance to find a driver.
However you can stick to your distro and search the net for a driver... hmm start with identifying your NIC (ethernet card) then use a dostool to set it to the appropriate settigns (IRQ, I/O, plug and play or not, etc...) if it's a PCI card Kudzu normally detects the card. (RH7.x for instance comes with Kudzu -> easy to config your system). If you really do not get your card to work --> switch your NIC with another one from another box you have there... I do that many times when I don't have time to get things to work at first. Since OS's support different cards, switching a NIC with another can save you lot's of time. But if you have time or no other NIC's you should be able to get your card to work. If you really have the knowlegde you can even write your own driver

these were my suggestions:

# fast: switch with another NIC. look at the compatibility list first, then get a card that is compatible (either purchase one, or get one out another box)

# medium: search for a driver, donwload it, try to set the appropriate settings, load the right module, and config your linux

# geek: write your own driver

lol, some call me a geek, but im not as advanced for that sort of lthing ive got my card name from windows, so im gonna search everywherefor it, if you feel generous its a
realtek rtl8139 (A) pci fast ethernet adaper, thans from controlpanel>system>netwrk adapters i dunno if i can get it from the site or the manufacturer, so if any of u know of any sites i can get this id have your children, lol, j/k
this is my first step into moving to linux, just a pity it couldnt have been easyier, lol

i dont want you to shout at me, but how do u mount the Floppy drive, i learned Hp-ux in college, and was never told.
lol, ill look for a linux manual instead of asking ulot.

ok sorry for posting too much, ive got the kudsu site, it looks like i have to setit up to run at boot sequence. and it needs other files to run.
would it be wize to get the boot kernel that comes on installation disks, so it sets up my pcmia cards for me?
