Ive done a bit of experimentation with this one in the past. Although only Mercedes are vunerable using a palm pilots built in IR transceiver, you can rather easily build/buy yourself a radio transceiver that nicely fits into your serial jack to capture/replay till your hearts content. Your gonna have to write your own software for it if you want to capture/replay sorry, but its well worth it. I got one working about 2 months ago. Garage doors, car central locking, security gates, docking bridges, remote controlled cars, anything working on that 21-28Mhz frequency is yours for the controlling.
Electromagnetics are your friend. Nobody expects you to steal radiowaves from right out infront of them. Also, that line-of-sight problem that exists with infared dosent really apply anymore (Still, you have to be within a resionable range, and at time interference can be a problem).
Once I smooth out all the bugs from my code and make it all nice I'll post it here for you all to enjoy.

i think that was on gone in 60 secconds... or something remotely like it... lol
yeah.. but it was with a radio scanner.. they basically pick up the radio frequency.. then send it back.. hehe ive seen that movie 4 times..

My laptop is a bit outdated, but it has a ifared port on it. Wouldnt it be possible in theory to get it to grab the signals from the
keychain, or even other infared controlled things?

A laptop with the IR is weak (especially the old ones) and can only transmit within a very few feet (if in a foot at all)
As far as I know, there isn't a IR capture program for a laptop, because there never really was a need for it...
The only reason the Palm has that ability, is due to the Omni-Remote program that can turn your Palm into a Universal Remote....

Re: Getting into Mercedes with a Palm

Believe it or not, people with a Palm pilot, Omni-Remote program, and a IR controller (for the later models of Palm) can record the Infra-red signal from the keychain of the car and then send the signal later to get into the Mercedes.....
How come just Mercedes? Unlike other vehicles, their inner controller functions on IR instead of radio frequency.....
Hope they don't start to make garage door openers with IR too....
(The only problem with this, is that the person with the Palm has to either be in front of you when you send the signal or they have possession of your keychain at any one time (like at a party) so that the Palm's Omni-Remote program can properly record the serial frequency for the IR)
You have a news worthy source for this? Seems pretty far fetched as my car, german(but not mercedes), uses RF and the code changes everytime. So even if you can steal my key chain and record the signal coming from it, it is useless as that is not the code that the car is expecting the next time. Seems logical that IR systems would work the same. Works very much like my tokenID I use for VPN access to my office.
