America is NOT free. You pay taxes every day you buy something. I have maybe paid 4 dollars today in fact in taxes. What do I get for it? Well, I get an army watching my back from people tring to take over my land. I get police officers protecting me if I need it, just 3 phone digits away. If I DO get hurt then I have an ambulance prolly already on the way. I was given an education for free for TWELVE YEARS!! I was given a road to get there. On that SAME road I was able to go to church. A church of MY choice. I wasn't shot in the head or chased by any gunman or "military" forces because of it. I am able to go where ever in the world I want. IT IS MY CHOICE AS AN AMERICAN! I am going to say the plege of allegiance. I will pledge to this country no matter what. If I need to go to war? FINE!! I'll go!! I signed up for the draft as soon as I turned eighteen. Its the LEAST I could do for my country. Just because some other people didn't always have their flags out DOESN'T mean MY family didn't. We have ALWAYS had the flag out. TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED FOR ME TO BE FREE FOR ME TOO DENOUNCE ANY OF THAT!!!! Its late and I am now going to bed WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT BEING BLOWN TOO ****!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

I am not an American. The majority of people here know my opinion on America and it's Government so I wont take this opportunity to feul the flames of a thread that's going no where fast.

It seems like the whole point of this thread is to give fellow Americans a pat on the back, wipe a tear from your eye as you salute the flag, and a mass green antipoints. "I'm an American too.....give me some greenies." Please.....

IMHO, Neg and GreekGoddess are the only two that had anything decent to say.....Just an opinion. I'll go back to lurking and let you "good ol' boys" go back to telling each other you have the best country in the world....

I think you're getting the wrong end of the stick here. Just because someone doesn't grovel at America's feet it doesn't mean that they can't join in the discussion. In fact, having people who don't like America posting means that two points of view are expressed, as opposed to a one-sided, biased thread that's just praising America and where everyone's saying how much they love to be American.

I'm not the world's biggest fan of America, but I don't hate them either. I'm proud to be English, and I ask that other people respect that, but I don't think it's your or indeed anyone's place to say where and when they can speak just because they don't share your patriotism. Some people don't like America, because they think that the Americans take what they want without caring about anyone else. Whether this is true or not is besides the point, those people see it that way and they have just as much right to express that view as you do to express your patriotism.

I too am an American, I was born and raised in this country and have much to thank it for.
But, I do agree with Greek Goddess that it's a bit sad that something like 9/11 has to occur in order for peoeple to realize their sense of pride in their country.
You wanna prove you're 'proud to be an American'? Back it up with something that isn't just words. Help out in a local homeless shelter, pick up the trash you see by the side of the road, and for god's sake..VOTE!

Thank you for your reasoned and thought out arguments.

    For scribblers all,
    Thank you for your posts.

I am fortunate to live in a country that runs along modern 'democratic' principles.

this allows me to freely and without fear stand up and state my views, provided they fall within the framework of the quasi-christian society that exists here.

This allows me to say that God does not exist.

This allows me to Join the Army and Swear an oath to my country and the Titular head of state without mentioning God, because of my personal belief system.

This allows me to denounce the Titular head of my country as Tax evading and who should be removed in title and position.

What it does not allow me to do is tell someone to shut up and leave the country if i disagree with them.

The only problem i tend to have is with zealous behaviour of whatever persuasion, whether it is with self appointed arbiters of world justice with a poor track record (El Salvadore, Nicaragua, panama etc), or with harsh undemocratic or theocratical movement or regime (Al-Qaida, hamas, Iran, Saudi Arabia etc).

As NTSA has as his footnote......
"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
    Sir Winston Churchill.
