Another strategy for running Linux and Windows in a "side-by-side" manner would be to use VMWare http://www.vmware.com to run a Windows Virtual Machine on a Linux workstation. I love this configuration, because you can actually network your workstation and the Windows Virtual Machine just like you would a real network with multple nodes. It's a nice, neat way to play with cross-platform services like Samba.
