I'm coming down in the Nissan camp here. I think as far as mechanics go, they are on equal footing. However, Toyotas are notoriously bad to develop body rust problems later on in life, especially if you live in the northern states where road salt is heavily used in the winter months. I hope you enjoy your new car, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

I just bought my first new car and looked at both the toyota and Nissan. I looked at the lower end model for both (toyota corolla, nissan sentra). I got WAY more room and features for the Nissan Sentra. Granted, what you getting is more luxurious, I'm sure you will love it as I do my Nissan!!

I like the Nismo-Skyline but nothing beats a Toy-GT1.

I was turning sixteen, graduating highschool that year, and asked my mother if I could get a car. She promptly kicked me in the @$$ and said "You've got a job, go buy yer own f@#$ing car!" I went and bought a motorcycle the next month..
I've had good experiences with both makes of auto, so I'm really indifferent to the two. I'd be looking for the economy factor, what kind of mileage are you gonna get and what is the insurance gonna cost.

From being in the business of cars, and living far north (Canada), we get tons of snow and salt here in the winter. While the Toyota's of old are notorious for rusting the newer ones are not.
I prefer toyota for the resale value, the look of them (exception the Echo LOL) the performance, the trouble free maintenence, and the availability of parts should you need them. Ie:car accidents.
While I don't disagree that nissan is also a fine car, I do not prefer the look of them nor do I find the parts easier to get. Here the costs of comprable models, Nissan is higher.
Many toyota cars are sporty and not just for the over 50 group. I have a 2001 Toyota Solara V6 2 door and it blows a lot of cars off the road off the line.
Nissan Maxima and Altima are both nice looking cars but I am not a fan of the Sentra.
In the end the way to decide is to give both a serious test drive and make sure you are comparing comprable models.
Happy Birthday and good luck with your choice.

Ok, now to talk purely performace divisions for both Toyota and Nissan. Do you want to drive a car with performance parts by TuRD (Toyota Racing Development) or Nissmo (Nissans performance division)?
I would be embarased having TuRD all over my car!
