PhoneLine Hacking

I want to ask a realy important question for me,
I live in a compound where there is only 2 phoneLines so I share a PhoneLine with some other houses who use it for connecting to the net,
can somebody who share my phoneLine Hack my PC through the PhoneLine itself,
i don't know much about phreaking and stealing phoneLines so if somebody does,please reply to my question and thanks everybody

Technically, yes. If you *really* want to feel a little bit more secure, just buy another phone line (if it's allowed). There are also instances that you can 'tap' into somebody elses conversation (sometimes even done accidentially).

But to answer your question - pretty much.

As far as I know if your machine ( or the modem ) is not in "wait for call" , then that is ok and safe. ( correct me if I'm wrong )

If you are in fact sharing a line with others, you can usually tell if someone else picks up on your conversation, unless it's through a scanner or something, and you are using a cordless phone that is non-digital. You can usually hear the click from the tap if they are manually tapping into your line by picking up another phone on the shared line and if you are listening closely. Don't worry so much...Web Carnage gave good advice in saying to see about paying for your own line...but maybe you can't afford it....

Unless you have business secrets, government coverups, order online a lot, or have all sorts of crazy pornography that is really embarrassing, you shouldn't worry so much about hackers, since you're not likely a target.

I'll agree with sargx, especially if you're on dial-up. It's difficult for someone to target you, specifically when you're dialing up to an ISP, as your IP number will likely be different every time you dial. On top of that, when you dial-up, you're not likely to be connected for long periods of time. I wouldn't worry too much. The biggest thing for you to be concerned about is sabotaging yourself by allowing virii, trojans, and other wildlife to enter your computer.
