To stop hearing that irritating modem squeal as it connects to the internet, and not often now how it's done. For an external modem it's easy - simply turn the volume down.
But for an internal, or external that doesn't have a volume control, modem it's a little more tricky.
Firstly, click Start/Settings/ControlPanel then double click the modems icon.
Select your modem and click on the properties button.
On the general tab look for "Speaker Volume". Click and hold your left mouse button over the slide control and move it to OFF. However, this doesn't work for all modems.
If you are in that situation then you will need to use a modem AT command.
To do this, click on the Advance Settings button. Then type the appropriate AT command for your modem.
This incidentally is where you put your Init string if you have one. Init strings I will discuss in a later article.
So, which AT command to use. Here's a list of AT commands that will control your modems sound levels.
AT COMMAND Modem volume effect
ATM0 No sound
ATM1 Modem makes noise until connection is made
ATM2 Modem makes sound whenever in use
ATM3 No dialing sounds, but modem makes noise until connection is established
