Mystery Boot problem
I have an interesting problem. On a machine running win98se the machine will sometimes boot and sometimes wont. Now im guessing its a hardware error but im not quite sure what it is. I did a check of the harddrive and it came up with nothing. Now when i say it doesn't boot ill power it on and nothing will happen. the bios screen wont show up or anything. Itll take maybe 3-4 power cycles for the machine to start. Where do you think the problem lies????
Thanx

Do you get a series of beeps? If you do the sequence can indicate the problem ( look at the motherboard manual ). If you don't I would suspect the power supply.

Damn! I was going to suggest those two things....
Also, you may have a problem with your bios battery?
Is there a error message? Exactly what happens?
It could be a virus or trojan writing to your boot files which the pc can't recognize. Or they could just be corrupt.
Any thoughts I'll post...

By the BIOS screen not loading, do you mean the POST (Power On Self Test)?
This basically checks for all h/w and makes sure it is working correctly before loading the OS.
As mentioned before, it could be a problem with your CPU or memory (if it makes two beeps, its the memory)
Does anything appear on the monitor when you power the machine on? If not what lights, if any, are on the monitor?

There are no beeps at all. If i turn on the power it just sits there with nothing happening. I have to cycle the power a couple of times to get it to boot up.
