ShagDevil.... if it seemed that I said turn to religion before suicide.. I'll say turn to anything before suicide.
As for the aggression towards certain religions (I.E. atheism) that isn't at all what I was getting at. I know that there are many people who suffer from depression who aren't atheist, and I also realize many atheists aren't suffering from depression. I was not indicating that atheism leads to depression. If that's how it came out to you, I apologize. My statement was meant to mean more along the lines of.. depressed people tend to lack faith (you call yourself a catholic, but are you a practising catholic or were you just baptized catholic, and decide that because of that, you can call yourself catholic)... I was raised catholic, the whole church thing, first communion, no meat on Good Friday.. yada yada yada.. I found when I started slipping in and out of my depression, I lost my faith, and that was what lead to atheism. So more properly my statement would have been depression leads to atheism rather than the other way around. Once again, i realize you said you were catholic, but I have to ask how good of a catholic you were. And i'm not going based on studies here, I'm going based on first had experience. As for the medication, again that's first hand experience, I've seen many, many people put on the drugs and 99 times out of 100 the results are the same. They worked for you, and that's great, but most of the time they won't work, or a person will go threw many combinations, with varied results before they find a combination that works, and the experience in between will be worse than anything the depression brings on. I've seen people on Paxil, and heard many people who have been on Paxil speak, and they always say the same thing, sure it helped me control myself, but that's because I was dead to the world. I honestly could care less what clinical studies show, because studies are like statistics, you can make them prove anything. I'm glad that it worked for you, but most people aren't that luckily.

HTRegz,Well, where shall we start? OK, let's again try to be civil, while pointing out ignorance once again.
You replied -
"My statement was meant to mean more along the lines of.. depressed people tend to lack faith"
You apparently didn't read my post when I said -
"I happen to be catholic by chance, but know a very many smart, mentally agile and content people who are atheist and agnostic"
Then you proceed to question the strength of my faith (irrelvent)
1."(you call yourself a catholic, but are you a practising catholic or were you just baptized catholic, and decide that because of that, you can call yourself catholic)... "
2."Once again, i realize you said you were catholic, but I have to ask how good of a catholic you were."
If you must know, I was in some form of catholic school since about I was 9 or 10 years old until my senior year in high school.
As for the sacraments, do Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation, ring a bell? Yes, I've done those.
as well as attend church regularly (good enough?)
Finally, you either didn't read this part of my post, or totally ignored it altogther
"these are the kind of blanket statements that show nothing short of prejudice based on personal experience."
You reply
"As for the medication, again that's first hand experience, I've seen many, many people put on the drugs and 99 times out of 100 the results are the same."
"I've seen people on Paxil, and heard many people who have been on Paxil speak, and they always say the same thing, sure it helped me control myself, but that's because I was dead to the world"
So let me get this straight, you're an authority on the applications of Paxil, even though you've never been on it? administered it? or done any extensive research involving observable results in test environments documented in scientific journals? Interesting.
Remind me again why your personal experiences are globally accepted as fact, I kinda forgot.
One last point -
"many people put on the drugs and 99 times out of 100 the results are the same"
(99 out of 100 eh? that almost sounds like a statistic to me)
later on you say -
"studies are like statistics, you can make them prove anything".
I think, by your post and the wild assertions you've made, you've clearly indicated you may need to humor the idea of your being a total hypocrite.
P.S I'll take a clinical study over your first hand experience anyday

G'day....
I happen to be a very opinionated person on a few topics (two of them being medication (of any type), and the catholic religion). But I don't want to turn this into an arguing match. Like i said before it worked for you, and I'm glad it did. It works for some and not for others. I like sure things, I don't gamble for that reason, and I'm definately not gonna gamble when it's my body and mind I'm putting on the line if their are other ways I can deal with things first. So let's end this, there are many more productive things we can put our energy towards.

Alb.....u are wonderful!!! I have been dealing with depression for several years and i'm only 19. I have comtemplated suicide many times as everyone else has....but what keeps me from doing it is the thought of all the pain i'd put my loved ones under. i dont have many friends at school...and i'm not a very outgoing person irl....but i know when im loved and thats exactly what i am....and i am so greatful for it. death is the easy way out....and if everything was easy....life would be boring as hell.
