Why so hostile towards the newbies....
Hmmm, if they are ALL doing roll calls.... Uhm WHY?!?
Because thats what the newbie FAQ tell them todo.
THEY'RE EVERYWHERE AHHH!!
Weren't you a newbie here too once?
I dont think that they have been bumped up, i think they just enlisted.
If you dont like it, then
1 - remove the part in newbies FAQ where it says to roll call when registering
2 - remove the roll call section
3 - heck, dont allow any more newbies to join, i mean wtf?
The last posts on AO (last 2 weeks now) have been only wining and flaming about mistakes and posts done by newbies. Now they follow the FAQ and use the roll call, and you still wine!!!
I dont mean to be hostile, or rude, but why do issues like that manage to open thread with replies?
And the newbies who have posted in this thread, should'nt !!!
Sorry for my harsh words here, just my point of view. No offense intented.
Cheers everyone
oh, and NO!!
I think the bump up options are just fine!!

Hi Instronic,
I just wanna clear of this one.. "Theese roll calls" happened about 5/6 hours ago and the whole page full of "rolls calls" (so I think you missed that one ), so that's why The Specialist posted hist "thread" and I think everyone was surprised that "time" cause the whole page full of "roll calls" (nothing wrong with roll calls though..you should see it 5/6 hours ago).
Cheerss

instronics,
I dont think that they have been bumped up, i think they just enlisted...
Look at this 5 consecutive Roll Calls in the main page:
- Roll call called "Hey Hey", date: 01-18-2003, so... bumped up!!!
- Roll call called "Kinda new here.", date: 01-20-2003, so... bumped up!!!
- Roll call called "Hello.", date: 01-20-2003, so... bumped up!!!
- Roll call called "Just and introduction", date: 01-20-2003, so... bumped up!!!
- Roll call called "Yet another introduction....", date: 01-20-2003, so... bumped up!!!
Yes, they were bumped up, why???... i don't know!!! I hope it wasn't for what i'm thinking... too many "positive", "very positive" or "extremely positive" Roll Calls lately.
Bye.

I do kinda agree with instronics. I mean, we were all newbies once(I still am!) and we all have complained about what they say, AP's and not reading the FAQ etc. etc. Yeah, somepeople bumped 20 or so threads that were roll calls, but we shouldn't get rid of them.

Wouldn't it be better to have about 5 bumps per account rather than 1 bump per thread? Or atleast display the name of the person who bumped it?
Now there's an idea. Limiting to 5 a week or 1 a day, or perhaps 5 per month. Displaying the name of the person who bumped it would work too. I think we all have some good ideas, and if we work together; collaberate if you will, we can come up with some awesome ideas to help JP and other Mod's solve the Newbie problem.
If at first you don\'t succeed, try again. Then give up. There is no sense in being ridiculous about things!

Hmmmm
Why not a new column for TOP 10 Bumpers !
.: Shrekkie :., Now that is not too bad of an idea, this way it would automatically exploit the ones doing the bumping so they could be dealt with publically...
What do you think JP? Would this be a difficult task? Would it be within the ethical guidelines of AO to do such a thing?
How about the rest of the folks here? What do you think?
I have a question; are you the bug, or the windshield?

Huh. It looks like one of the posts that got bumped up (to judge by -DaRK-RaiDeR-'s post) was one of mine... and I know I didn't bump it up. Unless it was a system hiccup, I'm inclined to believe that someone was trying to be annoying (like Dahvid said). I don't think my post was scintillating enough to make someone think everyone should read it and bask in my wit.
As for .: Shrekkie :.'s suggestion, I can see that being useful, in terms of being able to self-police those who are bumping too much for no reason, but it's also giving attention to those who are doing it just for the attention, no matter how negative. I haven't been here long enough to have a feel for if the latter is going to be a problem or not, so I'll leave it to those who've been here longer to decide.

While all the "Bumps" can be and are annoying in excess, I agree with the general comments from instronics.
An extra note an earlier comment (I am to lazy to quote it) regarding how the Home page was flooded with these bumps, blocking the other posts??? sorry ?? what is the problem? I thought the Home page was so We could see the recent traffic on the Forums. If you are a general Sandbagger or a regular poster, wouldn't you just visit the individual forums.. ie AO General Chit Chat, AntiVirus Discussions, Microsoft Security etc.. You will then catch the traffiic that is of interest to you.. not the general traffic of the hour..
If you live on the Home page you are missing 95% or more of the traffic, information and fun on this site.. And if you have a particular interest you could be missing a lot..
But to support the person with the comment regarding the home page and to bag the Bumper.. Some new spark of interest in security may be lost because of a newbie missing a Message Title that could have grabbed their attention..
Pse excuse my rave..
Cheers
