    Can you build a box that sits next to the TV that can manage the digital entertainment experience?...
    Devices announced at the recent International Consumer Electronics Show that should hit the market this year blend the storage and networking capability of a computer server with the TV recording and time-shifting ability of a TiVo...

    Popular Science November 2002 ran an article called The PC-Based Tivo Emulator by Paul Wallich. That talks of turning your Linux pc into a Tivo recording device. When I done setting Linux up I will play with that.
