erm, as far as I know, some one set a new data record a year or so back, using Optical cables running between france and england they sent something like 2.6Tb/s.
What they did was split the ligh up into something like 256 colours, and then sent it all parallel down one cable.....this wouldn't work on normal internet and such, but the speed was insane...I don't have a link to this, but some one feel free to correct me if I'm wong....any way...the difference here is that this technology wound't be very compatible with the internet right now, where as the one menioned in the first post is......any way....thats my 2 cents gone.

Noia, that's correct. The technology is called Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing. While searching for that I found this excellent long page which has all the connection types ever existed listed, sorted by speed but the year of invention also being there.
Dataphone; 300bps; 1958; 1st Modem: Bell Labs, Hayes AT commands.
    9,600 baud; 9.6K; 1984; 4th Modem speed
1Base5; 1.000M; 1986; 250 Meters Two pairs of twisted telephone cable.
    STS-1c; 51.840M; 1986; Synchronous Transport Signal, Level 1

agh, can u imagine a DoS attack from a DWDM? it would devestate....IE. those lines would have to be under lock and bolt untill general computers became powerfull enough to handel them...still.....a connection like that would be sweet....I'd DL every thing I could....not to metnion try to Map the web....hehe.....I want to make my own map of the web, like that one from ThinkGeek.com......any how....Insane speed.....absolutly insane......might be good for WAN's though.
