You could create a swap file, that will take care of the ram problem, also try to use another window manager. KDE is heavy, try something like window maker or even better, try black box. They are both a lot smaller and faster.

hmm... being as you appear to have sorted it h3r3tic I know this is a bit late... I'd go along with instronics idea if its possible. However I'm fairly sure that unless you install knoppix to HD rather than run off the CD you won't be able to create a swap space. I could be wrong but my understanding was that knoppix on CD ran almost entirely from RAM. I'm not sure how you'd go about creating swap space in RAM and writing the swap space to HD would defeat the object of knoppix on CD i.e. not to distur the current OS on HD.

out of interest what kind of machine are you running it on? If it's of interest I've got it on an old 400Mhz celeron with onboard sound and graphics with 160Mb RAM and it runs reasonably well even with KDE3 on it.

I have it on a 333 Mhz with 96 Mb of RAM. I'm probably just going to by some more ram, but thanks anyway.
