I'm always wondering why everyone wants to use p2p-networks. You get more crap than you dld-ed in the first place.
There's just no challenge on it. I love it to search something without those p2p, and heh... I every time seem to find what I need.
I agree. I can always find what I need. Well... almost always. You just have to know where to look and how to use a search engine properly.

On the otherhand... I think p2p networks are great for people who want publicity.

I have said it before and I'll say it again...

The only thing I use p2p for is to let people download some local bands' music that I am friends with.
I have their permission and there are several of us that do it. I have been getting more hits than ever... and more and more people are showing up to the shows. On their flyers... we recommend people search p2p networks for their music. If they want the CD, they can buy it at the show. If not... at least the band gets paid more because they are pulling in larger crowds.

It is a good way for small bands to get some publicity. Not everyone can get on MTV (most of which is crap anyway) and don't have the finances to get on the radio or place ads.
The next best thing... p2p networks.

With the good comes the bad.
Yes, the viruses... the priated software... and all that comes with it.
Quitmzilla is a firefox extension that gives you stats on how long you have quit smoking, how much money you\'ve saved, how much you haven\'t smoked and recent milestones. Very helpful for people who quit smoking and used to smoke at their computers... Helps out with the urges.

tampabay420 im afraid I have to disagree with you somewhat. If it wasn’t for software piracy it would not be possible for a great number of us to obtain the skills we need in today’s job market, keeping in mind that borrowing a CD to install it or having someone burn you a copy is the same ‘sin’ as downloading it. Piracy to me is not all black and white for even though it's always illegal it can be the lesser of two evils. Not many companys that hire use GNU software and ive never seen a shareware version of office.

However networks like kazaa and even napster (in their prime) are putting an end to our ability (it has never really been our right) to ‘beat’ a system designed to keep those without money down. Now we even have agents watching news groups to see who’s sharing software in uuencode or base64 format. This had never been considered a problem, by anyone, until a greedy few decided to make file sharing a corporate activity and a hobby out of collecting MP3s, games, movies and software. Although Napster started out for students that couldn’t afford much it ended up targeting the general public and was even advertising on billboards, subways and busses how easy it was for even the most technologically indifferent to steal. Christ…Napster even took out full page adds in newspapers with pictures of Mom, Dad and the kids, gathered around the computer stealing their favs. What other outcome could possibly come of this.

Id like to see commercial file sharing networks like these outlawed and the DMCA dogs taken off the internet. This way those with the smarts to get what they ‘need’ will be able to get it while the average greedy dumd-**** middle/upper class kid can ask mom or dad for the money to buy a new game or music CD. Maybe even buy the latest DVD for a change and spend a little less on beer.

how else would i get my MAYA software? i understand why some people would have a problem with getting illegal software, but if i'm going to use MAYA i don't exactally have $16k lying around to get a legal copy, now do i? and i also think that if i can put a CD in my drive, rip it as mp3s to my hard drive, and transfer those mp3s to a portable, the "industry" shouldn't have such a fit about going one step further and sharing those files with others. i don't use KAZAA much- i've had too too many friends get nasty nasty bugs that way. IRC is a pretty decent way to go, alebit a little more complicated.
another thing about KAZAA- "there's no such thing as a free lunch." yes, some software you get is the real deal, but a lot of other software isn't.

I just recently started using KazaaLite K++ Edition and it's really sweet, it's not just all hacked up and featureless, it has Kazap built in as well as some other cool search and source finding features which makes it more efficient when looking for things.

KaZaA increses income for (small) bands !!

Small bands (starting / new artists) will not be shown on TV listened to on the radio and/or appera on your fav. festival..
They get "famous" by word of mouth and/or performing in small pubs..

The word of mouth on KaZaA works quite well for small bands.. and if you like a band you have heard, you are more likely to buy their album..

I would never buy a CD without listening to the songs on forehand (well if I allready own all other CD's by the band/artist I might.. but OK..) ..

Same with DVD's if I like the DiVX and want a better Quality version.. I buy it..
If I don't know about it, I won't buy it...

so the only people afraid of P2P are established Audio and/or Video makers.. they are the only ones with lowering income..

So It's not about stealing.. It's about a shift from the commercial to the good !!
ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI.

If the multi-million dollar company's don't go to sufficiant length's to keep their programs from being pirated that's their fault. All they would have to do is Require a cd key, wich would stop most people that didn't have a keygen, and for those that do have a keygen they could require a Registration that ask's for your name and e-mail, not to invasive, just enough to get ya' if you are stealing their stuff.

From a system administration/ISP user stand point P2P is the biggest evil ever. My stupid users try to use it then complain to management when they can't get through my firewall. Every one complains after I'm forced to let them through because bandwidth goes to hell from all of their uploading/downloading. The cable segment I use to be on had 56k speeds because of all the file sharing going on....P2P users are some of the most selfish inconsiderate people around...Hey folks you are killing every one around your connection. and hurting your ISP/School/company (as a cooperate customer we pay by aggregate kbps..the only way I could convince management that they didn't need there music was showing them the next months bill).
Who is more trustworthy then all of the gurus or Buddha’s?
