Is it necessary to have Antivirus software on Linux?

Did I specificly say install through linux? NO! As I was mentioning: If some guy downloads something that appears as "a cool game" he is more then likely to switch to windows to play around with it but he/she ends up seting up a attack on the system.... and as long as its in the windows enviroment it'll keep going.

Oh and.. actually I was refering to dDoS utlilities that could be planted into a sys. and how they could still do dDoS attacks on other platforms which BTW the dDoS tools can sometimes be detected with !!!"AV"!!! But yeah... if your on the other side of the attack beleave it or not being noisy over the phone while calling the ISP or look very threatening in the offices of your ISP might force them to do something after all... As far as i am concern,security is based on antivirus software and firewall.They both play an important roles in maintaining a good security.For window,if you wanna stop a DDOS attack and you use a good firewall which able to drop the flooding packets instead of blocking it.If your firewall tend to block it,then i would say that this firewall is no good cos your system will slow down from the flood keep coming through.When your firewall is able to drop the packet,the flood is almost has no effect on your system at all.

What I'd say to that question is this, regardless of there being less viruses and worms for linux, you may still want to run an anti virus on your linux box, because you might be running a server, Mail for example, now, would you like some stupid vb script messing with the users you serve? If your not running any server on linux, then I'd say it's not necessary as long as you don't run any executable files from unknown sources.

You could have atleast changed the changed OS names and replaced it with a MicroSoft OS in the part where you said: "There is no such thing as linux, it does not exist. Even I a Winblows XP user would rather see a attack on M$ instead of Linux. I may not be overly fond of Linux, but there are worse things out there.

Microsoft is really lousy cos too many flaws found on their OS,especially the buffer overflow.I have been using Window OS for more than 20 years and i still find Linux is still the best OS out in the market.Microsoft Window OS is so prone to DDOS,therefore i do not like it at all cos you will realise the vulernability when someone try to find exploits on your system.Window also cannot stop or drop the packets if someone try prone your ports or doing all sorts of flood attacks such as Land attack,Smurf attack,Spoof flood attack,etc.If you look around,those hardware firewalls are using Linux base firewall to protect your system.

Umm a fire wall wont stop a DDOS from doing its thing, and Linux is just as vulenerable as Windows..if some one decides to DDOS you all you can do is rotate your IP or get your ISP to block the attack vectors.. As for the attackes you mentioned they where all aimed at the *nix world origionaly, sure windows is suseptable (if un pached) but so is *nix(if unpatched). Windows has a lot of problems (resource hog, security issues, ect) so dose every operating system..If you want somehting secure go to system 7 or OS2/warp

Who tell you that a firewall will not stop a DDOS.If you talk about DDOS attacks,you can filter all these very easy with a good hardware appliance(hardware firewall) or using a good software firewall being able to drop the flood packets instead of blocking it.You do not need to turn to your ISP for help instead you can solve it by yourself.I got average of 200 DDOS a day and i solve it myself without affecting my system perform.

I do agree with you that unpatch Window OS or Linux are prone to DDOS.Therefore it is very important to get up to date your patches for Window or Linux.It is important to get a firewall to secure it.
