thanks i have sussed out how to do it now but i don't think it will help as we need to have different profiles accessing different drives has anyone got any other ideas ps my it tech isn't thick she knows what she is doing and i believe she is also fully experienced

humm if every student has a diferent profile that makes it difacult, Group poilicy could resrict access t othe drives but they would still be visable...that may help a little
Who is more trustworthy then all of the gurus or Buddha’s?

no i didn't mean that what i meant is different profiles like admin, staff, student, etc

Oh in that case its easy ...just setup a manditory profile for a group called students teh nuse poledit to enforce it on all the students...admin and staff should be in difrent groups.
This gets much easier with Active Directory

No command Line stuff that I know of, jsut make sure you have poledit on the system (installes with NT) on 2k you will use the group policy editor, it should have a way to generate poiliciys for NT domains as apposed to AD. This should be a MMC snapin been a while so I may be wrong on that

I agree with most....u need a tech....
but on to the good stuff;
u say their running nt....I've seen users shutoff the default drive letters....this is typicaly C$ D$
although they can't kill the ipc$, if your on a domain(workgroups....shudder's) so check if there's $ signs in the default shares discribed in (rightclick/sharing) on each drive.... the $ behind the letter is what makes the drive invisible, say in network neighbourhood
always lookin for the simplest way i am....
jeez I\'m tired of ms and bill lining his pockets, but it keeps me employed
