Basically, to try to answer your question. If your running some kind of firewall that's blocking your ports, your off to a great start. Now opening it up a little to allow your game to work online is not so bad, because although the port is open, it's in use, and I'm gonna assume that the game is not gonna except any connections that are not from a game server you connected to. You should be resonably safe to play your game.
On the other hand, make sure that your game is up to date with the latest patch for the it.

Games aren't that big of a security risk. They mostly just shovel UDP packets back and forth. Thats not to say that risk don't exist.
I think quake was the worst game security wise.

Type in quake in the keyword search to find all kinds of buffer over flows and denial of service vulnerabilities.
Its not software piracy. I’m just making multiple off site backups.

Actually dbz9112003 the lack of security in XP is mainly due to the fact that its a popular OS style that alot of home users have switched to. And many home users don't know a thing about computers yet they own them... Once you've tweaked XP and dissabled all of the needless services in XP, got a firewall, AV, anti-spyware/adware, trojan removal & (ect). then it ain't all that bad.
(</ME mocking dbz9112003> : Oh BooHoo XP isn't the most secure OS so I think I'll make fun of Death_Knight's box even though chances are we both own the same OS.)
|The|Specialist says: So why don't you stop crying and taunting... and just grab a XP box then fix it, chump!

You're alright dood,
Your asking questions, doing research and learning the risks. Go have fun, play some cards and frag some PeePs.
