asf or wmv to mpg

Is there a simple way either using mplayer or another tool that I can convert asf files to mpg and also wmv to mpg?

TMPGenc is not linux based or it would work great. The other sites are windows based mostly too,

i know mplayer will encode to mpg but not sure if it will work since the mplayer site says mpeg1 is not fully supported for audio playback after encoding.

I am however going to try to use TMPGenc on a windows machine, but any ideas on a free linux only tool?
