cable internet related queries
Hi,
I have subscribed to a cable internet connection, where in to connect to the internet , i have to first login to their site, which is hosted on their computer.
I want to know if its possible for me & others subscribers of the cable network, to know as to who all r online.
initially i could see other computers, in my network neighbourhood, but lately , thats not posssible. why??
By knowing how many users r online, i might know why the connection is so slow at times.
Is it possible for the others users or the cable internet provider to access the contents of my system.

Not sure since im still running on 56k but it seems to be that the busiest times coincide with the slowest speeds on cable internet which is usually in the morning before people go to work and after they get home from work generally around 3 or 4. As to other users accessing the contents of your system I believe that they could only do that if you have enabled file/print sharing. Someone else will have to confirm my thoughts though.

Not if you run some sort of firewall turn off filesharing and shut down any services that you don't need running I don't know that much about windows 2000 server I just posted what I do know and what I would do

Seeing other users in your Network Neighborhood. That sounds like a glitch of your ISP. Back when cable internet first came out here in B.C. you could see the same thing in your Network neighborhood. It was a security risk to everyone so they fixed it. But there have been heated discussions on AO about uncapping bandwidth so it doesnt matter how many people are online in your area cuz you can hog the bandwidth with certain programs. I wont suggest it becuase some people will bitch at me but it is an option.

It is all going to depend on how your ISP set up the cable service. Most cable providers here in the States have switched to DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) which is not supposed to allow you to see your neighbors ( and also give you some security ) Like Krimlin said, when it first came out here I could see others, and that is BAD, because they can also see you and just like any LAN could sniff your packets! ( that doesn't sound decent, does it? )
However it is set up, make sure you have a good firewall set up properly, and shut off unnecessary services as DeadAddict said. And don't worry about who is online, you will get to know the times most people are online just by using it ( kinda like you knew when your dial-up service was going to give you a busy signal )

Most likely it is your network neighborhood and the Bandwidth killers like online gameing, P2P programs, and it can also be faulty wireing. Call your cable company service provider, this is where you get to do some social engineering and ask them what there download and uploads speeds are suppose to be or what they atleast advertise, next go to www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest and run your test there and compare the two. if you arent getting the speeds you where promised call and make a complaint to the Service providers president or CEO. and dont let down till they fix the problem.

Yes, it's possible for others to view the contents of your system, if you make services available on your system, such as drive shares, and mis-configured ftp and webservers. It's really a privacy then, your isp is not going to tell you who is online.
You do have an expectation of a certain amount of speed that you purchase in your month plan. You'd do yourself alot of good by using some type of bandwidth monitoring tool, so you can check your speeds and how they vary though-out the day. You can then report this info to your isp if they are not meeting the requirements of the service.

Cable modems can also be hacked, enabling a user to consume some serious bandwidth. So if you are encountering extremely slow response times, report the problem to your ISP. They may need to place a sniffer on the segment.
As for seeing other PC's on the network. I agree with IKnowNot. Another possibility though is that your ISP placed theirclient Authentication server within a DMZ and disabled NetBios calls on the box.
