Most versions of linux will ask you to either do a manual partition or a automatic partition and ask you if you want to delete all the partitions or create new partitions I recomend letting linux do the partitions unless you know how to partition the drive.
You can download linux from www.linuxiso.org they have different distros the best part they are free and they show you how to make a bootable Iso.

I have always found Mark Minasi's books quite helpful. For example, "Mastering Windows 2000 Server - Fourth Edition" is quite good and covers every aspect of configuration and administration.
As others have indicated, there are many excellent sites on the Net that will help you out, but I would recommend this book to be on your shelf for ongoing reference and in-depth learning.

    Best of Luck !

Minasi's books (and courses) are great. The Third & Fourth edition miss one important detail on DNS. And they admit it. Since they don't (or didn't) have DSL in their area; they do not describe how to install DNS behind a Firewall/Router. That information is available at Microsoft. (sorry but I don't remember the page)

You can go to ftp://www.pureescape.net/pub/ebooks to get some great reading material on networking and certifications.
