But this kid is only Blaster.B... Not the original Blaster.. read the story.. he is a dick just the same.. But the original MSBlaster/Lovsan writer is still to be found..
This kids main crime is that of being an Idiot.. 1/ he slightly modified someoneelses virii code. 2/ He allowed someone else to view him doing this and releasing it.. 3/ He released it without covering his tail at all..

Sentence: 5yrs for releasing a Virus into the Wild plus 25yrs for being an Idiot..

    cheers

I beleave your talking about "on_the_fly" who downloaded some virus creation kit which doesn't even require any drag and drop... it just needed the point and click part. And then there was homePage and many... many... many... more virii that spread into the wild due to other idiots who downloaded that kit. Whats funny about it is the author of the kit seemingly had the courtroom in the palm of his hands... after all it was those kiddies who did most the dirty work. The only thing he did was make the software to help them along the way...

As for blaster.B I don't know about you guys but I heard that this kid got most of his source code from a few friends in IRC and on a few boards and the only thing he edited without help from his friends was a few message boxes & things with cuss words and references towards Bill Gates and M$.

But If you'd look in the past though he is really lucky since most of the time virii spreaders get charges compaired to small-time theft or minor drug offenses.

I believe the most interesting reading comes from Arrest Warrant for Jeffrey Lee Parson (FindLaw pdf)

I won’t pick apart too much the document, that is up to the attorneys. But I do have some questions.

According to the document referenced, on August 14th, M$ “became aware” of the backdoor installed by the Lovesan B variant of Mblaster to www.t33kid.com

The Feds, on August 15th, were advised that the hosting company for www.t33kid.com ( the site that the variant contacted ) had received reports on August 12 of a complaint that a computer had been infected “ ... with some code that was attempting to contact the www.t33kid.com web site”

On August 16th the www.t33kid.com server was seized ( “ FBI agents secured the computer that hosted the www.t33kid.com web site ...” ).

On August 18th the Feds learned that www.t33kid.com was linked to dl.t33kid.com which was linked to the suspect's IP address.

On August 19th the Feds searched the suspect's home and seized seven computers. The same day the suspect admitted modifying the Balster worm and creating a variant, and renamed the original executable MSBlast.exe, named it after his online name, and included back door software which he copied.

On August 28th an application for a warrant for the suspect was issued on behalf of M$ who claimed damages.

Obviously from the articles I have read the suspect was not the sharpest tool in the shed, and it just illustrates that it takes little computer skill to construct a virus and cause such havoc.

    Question 1:

what would the Feds have done if the DDOS was targeted at “ mom&pop.com” or “joe_****_the_ragman.com”?

From FBI to Arrest Teen in Internet Attack
... A witness reportedly saw the teen testing the infection and called authorities, the official said.
    Question 2:
Why did it take so long to apply for the warrant after the suspect had admitted the offense ?? The Feds, at the time of the application, still had not analyzed ( according to the application referenced ) any of the computers involved, had not received any additional information, so what were they waiting for? Why was the alleged “witness” not referenced in the warrant application??

    Question 3:
Why would ANYONE, as eluded to before in this thread, hire this individual to safeguard their or anyone else's systems? Twenty-five years ago maybe, he would have been one of a hand full of individuals who understood computers even with his limited competence. But times have changed, as have attitudes.

    I agree..

It does seem that the FBI is getting very serious now about cybercrime. Obviously they do have a ways to go in their investigative and analytical process, not to mention their press releases However it does seem that this is a step in the right direction. Maybe this arrest is just the tip of the iceberg as far as further investigations and arrests go.

At this point though, the message needs to go out loud and clear......Whether you are the authors of this stuff or merely the mules... you go to jail.

However, more than likely, when this calms down the kid will be approached and hired to do development/security work and will end up making a boat load of cash. I know of serveral instances where this has happened.
I totally agree with you man. These other guys don't know what they are talking about. I being a child that grew up in the not too good areas of L. A. know that these guys don't have pronlems in prison. They are not going to get bothered. Now you put a child rapist or child abuser in there and then convicts rise up but computer crime... come on guys be real. They might not even understand what exactly this guy did. In either case he is just another rebel. He did his part whatever that was. They won't care byt they I mean his peers in jail.

I don't think they put Computer Criminals into general population. If convicted, he will spend his time around people convicted of embezzlement and other "corporate" crimes in a minimum security prison. His accomplishment (if you want to call it that) of modifying a virus and unleashing it is rather lame so I doubt anybody will be beating down his door to offer him a job when he gets out.

Just an idiot looking for a little fame from a life where he probably had little recognition other than his online 'hacker'status.

Kinda sad even though he caused havoc, anyway wonder when they'll find the real culprit.

Yes, this kid would be hired for security and further development or can be hired by FBI or NSA agencies. But that does'tn mean that every programmer had to launch such sort of worms for cheap publicity. Get this kid with some of my friends (their networks got bugged by this stupid blaster worm). May be they could fix em in a better way....
    Just wondering......
