Win XP is good to reboot alone. If you can, try checking the System Utilites in Controle Panel disabling the Automatic Reboot check box (It's deep in the system propriete, cannot remember where exactly) and check your Event Viewer for dump log. If you have dump log, you probably have bad memory!

    Hi,

I see progress, but we need more information?

    1. Was your machine supplied with WIN XP, or is it an upgrade from some earlier Windows? If so, which? (NTFS or FAT32 + stability)
    2. How long has it run correctly, before this problem arrived? (malware theory)
    3. Have you recently upgraded any hardware? For example the video card, sound card, or modem (seen that before )
    4. You stated that it would not read the XP Disk? Was that in "safe mode" (when it probably hadn't loaded your CD drivers) or a straight boot. In the straight boot case you need to go into "setup" ....when you start the POST cycle, and change the boot order to floppy, CD, HDD.

After that, what Und3ertak3r says sounds fine...............particularly the bit about the pig I don't like losing to South Africans either...or was that a typo? Sort of Rugby/Cricket joke there.

Best of luck, and stick at it

    Cheers

    Hi all,
thanks for the help. I managed to reformat the comp with the CD-ROM boot as first boot device and thus managed to read the XP cd-rom.
nihil, I've fat32, and that was what I did according to your #4 suggestion.
    Once again, thanks all.
