Just wanted to point out that there is absolutely nothing illegal about KaZaA itself (I think I saw someone make that statement). There's nothing illegal about sharing non-copyrighted files, songs, pictures, movies, whatever.

HTRegz > you're absolutely right, but think about this... let's take one of those punk bands you talk about.
- They record their album for 2500 bucks. They have (almost) no other expenses. Their roadies are probably happy with a case of beer. Let's say the actual manufacturing of one of their cd's costs 25 cents per cd. If they sell their cd's for 5 bucks, they gain 4.75 bucks per cd.
If they sell 525 cd's, they're even.

- Now take a "major" band. Recording costs (studio time) + producer: 200k. Distribution, mercandising: another 200k. That's 400k, and we're not even talking about anything else.
They sell their cd's for 20 bucks, while the actual manufacturing of one cd costs 25 cents, which is a profit of 19.25 bucks per cd.
If they sell 20,700 cd's, they're even.... But if you're into music profesionally, only being even isn't exactly your dream... even artists need to eat.

Just something to ponder...

And there's something else: "stealing" music isn't the only problem... the losses on merchandise due to fake stuff are probably almost as high as those on cd's, but I guess that's not within the scope of this site
