How to start your computer when it won’t. Boot to command prompt, edit system.ini file, change the boot line shell=explorer to shell=progman.exe save & restart. Windows will start with the 3.1 program manager. Click file, run, type control appwiz.cpl and hit enter. This will bring up the add/remove programs wizard. Select your program to remove. Remember and change the system.ini file back to shell=explorer.exe

I found this tip on a website it should work with your windows xp pro box. But be careful when you try this. This should allow you to remove the Nero software. Then maybe you can try reinstalling it. Hope that helps.

errr this might sound really stupid but how do I boot in command prompt I tried F8 but it didn't give me the option of command prompt???

Here is another tip that I found : This is probably why you cannot read the Blue Screen Of Death message that you get.

When you are running Windows XP, you may have noticed that every so often (rarely) that Windows reboots without you asking it to. This tends to be caused by a Blue Screen error. If you want to see what this error is, you will have to check the error log list because Windows reboots too quickly for you to read what happened. Well with this tip you can disable the Auto-Reboot so you can finally read, and see the blue screen error.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
Go to Advanced
Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

You could also try booting with an antivirus disk and run a scan on your system. You might have a virus but I doubt it.

re-installing XP may help but it is rather an extreme thing to do if I can get command prompt it would be much preferable

I also doubt I have a virus I have zone alarm pro and a fully updated AVG free edition that has a boot scanner

you can use the System Restore feature if you have it enabled, by running it form the command prompt. To do this:

Restart your computer and press F8 after the POST screen to bring up the Windows XP boot menu. Choose 'boot in safe mode with command prompt.'

If your system gets to the command prompt successfully, type
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and then press enter. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your computer to a previous saved point.

But either than that I cannot think of anything else that you could do. Sorry but I have seem to have run out of ideas. Maybe somone else on this forum might have other suggestions. I'll keep searching though.

And use bootdisk to login and fix or bootable CD if you have. You can also rename folders where
you have program, to prevent start up of programs that you think can couse problems.
