Ping stands for Packet Internet Groper and is a utility that is used to determine whether a particular computer is currently connected to the Internet. It works by sending a packet to the specified IP address and waiting for a reply.

Its not really a bad thing.

If you want to see what ping looks like just go to your command prompt and type

    ping yahoo.com
    =

I don't know if your firewall can, but if it can block specific services and types, just have it drop all incoming ICMP type 0 packets. That will stop it if they are pinging with standard ICMP. Youll still be able to ger TCP type 8 packets, though.

    Just a thought

ok thanks. Now i understand whey it would bother someone tho be pinged. It is the way a hacker would try and determine if your online or not.

Yes, but not just a hacker/attacker. Some cable providers may do etsts on your connection throughout the day.

For the person who got those pings on their firewall, was the IP address the same? The same host? Something? What kind of connection do you have?

It will get worse. I read an article on "SPIM" , the IM version of spam.

I never installed any IM or ICQ software as I saw this being another annoyance. The jerks out there will destroy any productive tool they can. Does anybody buy the **** they are trying to sell?

Okay to answer the NOOB question, yes it does get bad. The pining is from another dial up accourding to my firewall report, they are traveling around thru Seattle, Phonix, Dallas, and a few other cities trying each port. The good thing is that all my ports including port 0 are stealthed. And I have had my firewall testedand passed with flying colours. Of course IP address is not stealthed and I should think about stealthing it. Becuase this person hits my IP several times using different IP address's but still the same route, strange I think. The hits so far from this pinger has been over 2700 times so far and not yet have they gotten thru. So I feel my system is well protected but I dont believe this person is going to give up till they finally get thru.

Ok, so since you're on dial-up... your IP changes every time you connect. Am I correct in saying that you think someone is following your from IP to IP? If I am following you, you're saying everytime you connect, you're getting pinged by the same IP?

How about a cut and paste of your firewall log? Go ahead and obscure your IP number if you think you need to... I have a little hunch
