    Question Newbie Question

Mk, I'm kinda new to network, TCP/IP, and security. All I worry about is my own firewall, and encrypting my sensitive data. I was wondering if someone could give me a quick t00t on what a proxy is and how it works. As far as I can tell, it just another remote system to connect to the internet through. I'd like to learn more about this.

    Thanx

Think of it as call-forwarding (or a 3-way call). Your establish a connection with the proxy and it establishes a connection with the party you want to contact. The party you are contacting will see the address/number of the proxy rather than your address/number. All three parties have access to the data, but the person on the recieving end has no idea who is on the calling end unless they choose to identify themselves.

In funky hacker movies and such you'll see them trace a connection (or in other movies trace a call). Those images on the screen of the random locations with the connection tunnelling through them. That's what it would look like if you went through several proxies to your destination...

Canada --> Proxy in the US --> Finland

The Computer in finland thinks i've come from the US.

Thank you . I'm in a bad mood and wanted to vent and the fact that you are a complete and utter moron has given me the opportunity.

    Man I feel better.
Well, at least this thread was good for one thing!

I am going to use that list of proxies in the script I'm making in JavaScript now so that you can cheat Top100 lists that only allow 1 vote per IP lol!

The problem with most proxies, is that they are open one day and dead the next. Here is a link to get fresh proxies, in realtime. http://www.samair.ru/proxy/realtime/ There's my two cents.

    Talking Thanx Alot

Thanx alot for your post, told me everything I needed to know. Now I see why "hackers" always want to connect to a proxy before continuing onto the malicious deeds.
