Damn! HTRegz I’ve never seen you so passionate !

Not to say you don’t have reason, and loved that VMWare exercise example.

Lets see, I lost track. The question was
... would in theory i be able to create a webpage using the university webspace (and PHP) that detected any connections coming from the outside world, which then connected to my pc (inside the network) and set up a session to send the file to my friend.
I could be wrong, but I think it would depend on what type firewall, how the firewall was set up, how the network was set up, etc.

I’m guessing here, but you probably have a dynamic IP address on an intranet: The web page would have to reference your dynamic address and FTP server ( provided that the network firewall(s) would allow FTP and it was not a violation of use policy ) and you would have to ensure the computer was on when your friend tried to connect using the same address you set up on the script, all the while hoping that the network admin restricted private address requests from leaving the network.

Possible? Probably. BUT WHY ?? If you have web space why not just place it there? Or as mentioned before send it in an IM session. Or burn it to a CD and mail it! All are easier. Why would you want to open up YOUR network ( and the campus using your computers as a launching point ) to the vulnerabilities of an FTP server ??

And nihil ... so diplomatic !!

How about you walk down to the computer shop buy yourself a CD burner, burn it and give him or post him a copy. w00t, no legals broken (except if its unauthorised software.)

    Mikester,

    Thanks for the response. 460Mb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!................ouch!

In all honesty mate, you have to go for a CD/DVD burner, hey, even Micro$oft wouldn't expect you to download something that big

OK you could use LS120 or a Zip drive provided you both have them, or one of those fancy new USB storage devices.

It did occur to me that you need to keep your eye on bandwidth here? I don't know what your friend's cable deal is but I know that some Universities are pretty mean about that, and charge ("fine" is a better word ) people who exceed their allocation?

I would hate to suggest some "really cool" solution and have you get a bill for $100, when you could have gone down the store and picked up a CD burner for 30 bucks?

I am afraid I don't have a link but there is some freeware called "HJSplit", the latest version supports massive file sizes and it will split files in a few seconds. It only takes a few seconds to re-assemble at the other end. The footprint is only about 200k as far as I recall!!!

If you have any problems finding it, give me a shout (PM or post) and I will zip a copy up for you.

If you split the file you could put the component parts on your Uni website, bit by bit.

I was interested because I have had a lot of "experience" in delivering software & updates to remote sites................but I think that 56Mb was about my best!

Good luck, and let me know if you need that software.
